O CALL TO ACTION Kona Conservatiòn The Konawaena High School Leo Club is partnering with the Kona Soil and Water Conservation District, The Lions Club of Kona, and the County of Hawaii to educate our community about Kona's Fragile Environment. Many harmful changes brought on by increased population, invasive species, poor land management and climate change, are now critically affecting Kona, and the rest of island. Extensive deforestation and soil degradation exist throughout the Kona District. YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Bare soil and rocky soils release carbon, destroy topsoil and soil microbi- al life. Keeping soils covered with vegetation (grasses, trees, shrubs), and organic matter improves soil quality, and addresses climate change by allowing the soil to sequester and store atmospheric carbon. Please maintain roadsides, vacant lots, residential & business properties, and farmlands with low growing grasses, vegetation and organic matter. Reduce or eliminate herbicide spraying on your property! Please plant native trees whenever possible.
