PIKE'S CORNER My dad skied Mauna Kea. I didn't een know you could do that. My parents have had their skis sitting in our storage shed for the last 14 years. Mom went to put her boots on and the plastic shattered apart like glass, She was super sad. Lucky for dad his boots, while definitely not in perfect shape, would be good enough for a few turns down the mountain. They left my naughty brother at the office with one of our team that was working on something and went up the mountain bright and early. They said ir was crazy the amount of traffic on the mountain. My sister was talking abour all the trucks coming back down with full beds filled with snow to bring back into town so that little kids that cannot venture up to the top of the mountain due to height could experience snow. My mom and sister looked like cold weather ninjas when they left the house. My sister in big snow boots and mom carrying with her boogie boards and a huge bag of gloves, hats, snow pants and various coats depending on the weather at the top. Dad had his ski boots and his skis but realized just before they left town that he forgot his poles. so back to the storage shed they went to get them and then up the mountain they went. They had a great day with no major issues except when my sister was sledding like a crazy and reached out for mom to slow her down and she reached for mom, grabbing moms knee and ended up with a bit of a fat lip. For the record she said knee biting is not a sport she would recommend. Dad was over the moon with his skiing adventure. He got 2 solid runs in before his ski boots too decided that they were going to ski boot heaven. His old Volant skis however, will most likely still be in our family several more decades from now. They are from a time before Hawaii when my mom and dad spent countless days on the slopes in Colorado. They are whar mom calls a tangible memory, our life is filled with these items and no matter how mom and dad try they just can not part with them. I have to say secing how happy they all were after their fun day on the mountain, made me wish that some how, some day I could experience snow. For the record they didnt bring me a bed full of snow back. I am disappointed. My sister said she thought it was best to leave it on the mountain for others to cnjoy. I guess since it is basically frozen water I could understand after all it just melts and is only a fleeting moment anyway. I guess I will just have to live vicariously through them and their adventures above 13 thousand feet. Until next time friends- Ruff.
