PET CHRONICLES You never know whom you might meet around the Island. I try and go walking whenever I have the opportunity on the nature trail in Waimea. The other day I had the lovely pleasure of meeting Emily Gail. She has been a figure around the big island for 30 years. When I looked her up on social media we had so many mutual friends, I am certain our path must have crossed at one point or another. She told me all about her cats and the conversation was great example of how easily you can slip into a conversation with people and just totally lose track of time. After writing this ad style column every week for the better part of 14 of our 15 years, I have come to learn that the degrees of separation are often only me to Pike or Dr.Head to myself. I have learned over the years how a particular story touched someone or a shared sentiment helped them in a moment of sorrow. I have tried to keep them pet centric (not always successfully) and I have attempted to bring some levity to some pretty tough years. Through it all, I have always questioned if the cost of writing was worth it and if the community really has any interest in what I'm rattling on about. It is always in these moments when I am looking for clarity, as if by magic someone sends me a letter or an email saying thank you for this or that column and I continue to write. This week that person was Emily Gail she introduced herself to me and when I told her my name she told me she always reads this column. It's a nice affirmation to stay the course and as long as Pike's Corner and the Pet Chronicles can bring a little bit of joy to you all, the energy and effort are worth it.
