PIKE'S CORNER The thing I have tried to understand for months now is why Newton has such a personal space issues? I mean lack of personal space really. It doesn't matter who, what, when, where, Newton has to be on it, in it, near it or in some cases underneath it. If my family is enjoying the sofa he decides he needs to be on it too, If I am lying on the massive dog bed he has to be on it too. If we are all in the truck together, he will literally stand up over us to have the best view out the window. He is impossible to live with in this sense. I have seen him up on beds, paws on counters, climbing up in to chairs, crawling on top of already occupied futon mats you name it. I have even seen him climb right into the shower while it is occupied. and this is where this story begins. My parent's shower doesn't have a door on it. It's just open with glass on 2 sides but otherwise you can just walk right in. When Newton was a puppy and mom was trying to corral him while she showered she used to stick him in the bathtub. Then he figured out how to get out so she would put him in his kennel and he woukd just HOWL.for how ever long it took her to sort her self out. Now dad takes the dogs outside and mom gets ready and then they switch. The other morning mom got a bit of a surprise when Newton came bounding into the shower chasing the small sprays of water as they came off of mom and ran down the glass. Mom tried to get him out of there bIt not wanting to touch him and get him even more wet she had to wait for dad to come to her rescue. Dad on arriving at the scene of the circus- grabbed Newton out giving mom raised eyebrows and a wry smile as he took the roaming renegade our of the shower. When he came back he apologized to mom for her rude shower companion and mom by then wrapped in a fluffy towel and now running late shot him a quick glare and a rue smile, saying turn about is fair play my friend. Fast forward a few days and dad had been out on a bike ride. He returned with terrible headache, filthy and he just wanted a shower and to lie down for a bit of a nap. As he showered mom was busy in the kirchen getting dinner taken care of. Newton who had been missing dad the whole day, decided to open the gate and get himself upstairs to make sure dad didn't need his help. Mom heard a commotion coming from upstairs and decided she better investigate. When she came around the corner Newton was standing fully in the shower. Dad had a head full of shampoo and was trying to get Newton to stop trying to lick his legs. Mom burst into laughter when she saw my dad with his foot out trying to hold Newton back, Newton was licking the bottom of dads foot, while trying to chase the splatters of water, that were falling all around him. Dad, already nor in a good mindset, glared at mom and then threw her a smile. Mom grabbed Newton who immediately shook water everywhere upon exiting the shower. She apologized to dad and raising her eyebrows in his direction she escorted Newton outside. When dad came down stairs Newton was so excited to see him, he climbed up on top of dad as he lay there on the sofa. Mom came to dads aid but Newton not deterred decided to lay half on half off of him instead. Dad in no mood to argue with 63 pounds of chaos lay there rubbing his aching head and wishing for a different lounging companion. I laid they too, only I was on the floor on the big dog bed wondering why and the heck they didn't have this situation with Newton and his understanding of personal space handled yet. Dad pushed Newton off once more and Newton prompely came over to the large dog bed where I had just settled in. I felt him lay behind me not touching me yet but then as was predictable the touch came. first a foot, then a leg, then well a whole Newton. I growled indignant and decided like dad some chaos is not worth the trouble and I closed my eyes and went to sleep. We are a year into this Newton adventure and it is still .- Ruff.
