PET CHRONICLES "No Newton" is a common refrain at our house. It's it usually followed by OUCH! Newton is just such a happy guy all the time that I think his exuberance for life finds him often in trouble. He always wants to be exactly where he should not be. As Pike told you all last week, Rome is starting to get some dementia. As a result, Newton has decided it is his sole responsibility to make sure Rome has all the help he needs getting up, when it's time to go outside and even a reminder to lay down when he is feeling less than perfect. This usually includes Newton upending poor Rome in some form or fashion. Rome who is clearly already frustrated with his current state of being. decides to just bark at Newton in response to all of this extra attention Newton is lavishing on him. This barking only excites Newton more causing more undo stress to poor Rome. Pike of course is always at the ready for a fight and reminds Newton with the biting end that his attentions are unwanted and to BACK OFF! This in turn escalates the issue and then suddenly we have a 3 ring circus of dogs barking and growling and poor Rome equally happy and unhappy to be part of the madness usually winds up on the bottom of the dog pile and Newton ever the pup sitting squarely on top of him. When Newton was little we had to put an invisible fence disk on Rome to keep him away from the little needle bitter that was Newton in his puppyhood. Now I think we are going to have to put a disk on Rome once again because all of Newton's extra love and support might just be the death of him. At 13 years old, Rome is clearly no spring chicken. Pike on the other hand would never be mistaken for 14 almost 15 years old. and in fact I am confident that he can still run circles around Newton and most other dogs half his age on any given day. Newton is a get in quick hit um-hard kind of guy. Pike is a "move like a butterfly, sting like a bee type of guy and he will keep moving until you get tired and then put you out to pasture. It's hard watching your older pets age, some move through it effortlessly and with such grace. While others arrive at the finish line like Wiley Coyote bruised and battered, being held together by loose screws, duck tape and perhaps a paperclip or 10. Rome is in the latter of those groups. We are confident that he will be with us as long as he is still eating and happy or until Newton somehow in trying to rescue him will end up doing more harm than good. Until then I am confident our 3-dog circus will continue to bring us joy and laughter, the quiet of the night broken by the ever present barking of dogs and the refrain of No Newton" ringing clearly into the air. We wanted to wish our beautiful daughter Elaina Kristine Head a very Happy Sweet 16th Birthday. We love you.
